Kick Off – Urban Churn Part 2

The rest of the chasers  – Chris, Kathy, Anna  and I visited Urban Churn on a Thursday evening.  Yes, I made the trip a second time, I am willing to sacrifice like that for my friends ;).  Before making the trip into the store, we each had to find on-street parking, and thus the first U-turn of the season happened!  A little background on u-turns – Anna and I rarely make a road trip where we don’t miss a turn or an exit, and so it doesn’t quite feel like a road trip without having to turn around in a parking lot and backtrack a little bit.  In this case, Anna first tried a parking spot at the end of a row, but ultimately decided it was too close to a driveway and a no parking sign.  After she got turned around, we headed inside.

In the store, we were greeted with a different selection of ice cream flavors, but the same friendly service and offers to sample the flavors. Between the four of us, we tried the usual favorites like chocolate, and the dark cherry was well-received.  Among the more exotic flavors we enjoyed were honey lemon lavender and lime cilantro.  The lime cilantro was very mild with just enough of the flavors to give the ice cream a nice twist.  The lavender in the honey lemon lavender seemed at first like it might be too much, but it too mellowed out and provided an interesting and delicious alternative to traditional ice cream flavors.  These unique and unexpected flavor combinations, along with the extra creamy texture of the ice cream, are what really makes Urban Churn stand out.  A nice bonus on our Thursday visit was their Happy Hour, where you get $1 off every dish of ice cream from 5-7 pm.

Next up – what better way to celebrate Independence Day than with ice cream?  We will be road-tripping to Perry County and Upper Dauphin County to get in a few more stops.  Stay tuned to see which chasers will appear, and maybe we’ll even have a special guest or two!  Until then, wishing you peace, love and ice cream!

Kick Off – Urban Churn Part 1

Hello fellow ice cream afficionados!  Sue here, co-author of the blog, road-trip navigator and lover of all things chocolate.   It’s taken us a little while to get rolling, but we’re happy to announce the ice cream chasing has begun!   While we try to get the whole group together for our ice cream ventures, unfortunately schedules sometimes clash.  So our first stop, Urban Churn, was accomplished in two different visits.

On a lovely Saturday afternoon, veteran chasers Danaca, Carrie and I were joined by our new chasers, Jess and Jamie, and their chasers-in-training Jaxon and Kya (who are the cutest ice cream loving twins in the ‘Burg!).   Now don’t let that new chaser title fool you – Jess and Jamie may be new to our Pursue Your Scoops adventures, but they are ice cream lovers from way back!

The seven of us piled into Urban Churn, which is located in midtown Harrisburg.  Urban Churn prides itself on making ice cream the old-fashioned way, but doing it with new and fun flavor combinations.  The day of our first visit, some of the featured flavors included Bourbon Vanilla, Marshmallow, and Lemon-Thyme-Feta.   Between the group of us, we covered most of the flavors they had, and all were delighted.

I had a scoop of the Bourbon Vanilla and a scoop of Salted Caramel, which complemented each other well.  Danaca, one of the more food-adventurous members of the group, tried the Lemon-Thyme-Feta and said it was uniquely cheesy.  When asked how she liked the marshmallow, Kya gave me an ice cream covered smile and head nod.  I think she didn’t want to say anything and risk any of that creamy sweetness escaping from her mouth!

Stay tuned for Urban Churn Part 2!

Let’s Meet Our Chasers!

Before I fill you in on Season 1 of Trip For Dips, I guess I should introduce you to our team of ice cream chasers. There will be six main ‘characters’ (and yes we ARE characters!) on our journey, although there will be frequent special guests 🙂

Here our six chasers, in alphabetical order:

Anna: ‘U-turn’ Anna is one of our drivers and a life-long ice cream lover. Before a snow storm, when everyone else runs to the store for bread and milk, Anna runs for ice cream. Why did I nickname her ‘U-turn’? You’ll see 😉

Carrie: One of our two Eastern PA members, She has no problem driving an hour or two to enjoy ice cream and laughs with our Central PA gang. Carrie is as sweet as ice cream. I’m sure you’ll appreciate her wit as you watch our videos.

Chris: Chris is our photographer and videographer. She will try her best to capture all of our antics on video. Hopefully we’ll be able to include a short video with each blog. Chris never met an ice cream she didn’t like!

Danaca: Danaca is our other Eastern PA member. She is a Penn State alum, so she knows good ice cream when she tastes it! And she’s willing to wait in a long line to get it!

Scenes from Season 1: Kathy, Chris, Anna, Sue, Carrie, and Danaca

Kathy: That’s me. I am the other driver. Not that Chris and Sue can’t drive. But they are usually busy with their other tasks. I will also be one of the co-authors of the blog. I’ve given up a lot of things that are bad for me in my lifetime, but I won’t give up ice cream!

Sue: Sue will be the other co-author. Sue is also our navigator. She is quick with Google Maps when necessary and is happy to let Anna know when she just missed a turn 😉 Sue is happy to travel far and wide for good ice cream!
